The most polarising trends of seasons past
UNIQUE and adventurous in fashion often equates to divisive and controversial.

From furkenstocks and garbage bags to the mix and match of the funky-offish variety you might have tried one, or all.

Here, the most polarising trends of seasons past and what the Vogue team thinks of them.

When Phoebe Philo championed minimalism at Céline, suddenly flashy logos and monogrammed bags fell out of favour with the fashion set. That was roughly five years ago and the trend pendulum has swung back again.

Vogue’s market editor Phillipa Brophy says, “I’m a kid from the 90s so I love a bit of logo dressing. It felt so normal at the time because that’s all we ever knew. But now, the likes of Moschino — trying too hard.”

From Adidas to Chloe, pool slides are having a moment, not to mention fashion’s recent proclivity for the Birkenstock. Céline’s spring 2013 offering had models in fur-lined slides, dubbed ‘furkenstocks’ to kickstart the trend and they’ve been everywhere since.
Vogue’s fashion assistant Monique Santos says “They’re the ultimate man-repelling shoe. I’ve gotten comments like “Jesus sandals”, “my Nonna wears those in the garden”, “grandma sandals” … but I love them. I also go as far as wearing mine with black socks- great for the plane and travelling.”
